Course Description

This is a first course on Anglo-Saxon (Old English) language, literature, and culture. There are weekly grammar lessons, language exercises, and translations. Concomitantly, there will be weekly readings in Anglo-Saxon history (modern scholarship) and literature (in translation). |

Course Objectives

1.) Complete a basic study of Old English grammar, including phonetics, morphology, and syntax (pronunciation, noun/adj. declension, verb conjugation, basic rules of syntax).
2.) Read Bede’s History of the English Church, Asser’s Life of Alfred, and all Old English poetry in translation.
3.) Write one research essay (term paper).
4.) Develop the ability to translate simple Old English prose. |
